Tire Size to Rim Width Chart
Find the minimum, ideal, and maximum safe rim width for any tire section width.
Quick Answer
For a standard 265mm wide tire (like a 265/70R17), the approved rim width range is between 7.0 and 9.0 inches. Mounting this tire on an 8.0-inch wide rim is considered the ideal, optimal fitment for even tread wear.
Rim width fitment chart (ETRTO standard)
| Tire Width | Recommended | Acceptable |
|---|
Acceptable Rim Widths by Tire Section Width
| Tire Section Width (mm) | Minimum Rim (in) | Ideal Rim (in) | Maximum Rim (in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 205 mm | 5.5" | 6.5" | 7.5" |
| 225 mm | 6.0" | 7.5" | 8.0" |
| 245 mm | 7.0" | 8.0" | 8.5" |
| 265 mm | 7.0" | 8.0" | 9.0" |
| 285 mm | 7.5" | 8.5" | 9.5" |
| 305 mm | 8.5" | 9.5" | 11.0" |
Formula
Ideal Rim Width = Section Width (in inches) × 0.85 (rounded to nearest 0.5 inch)
- Section Width (in) = tire section width in mm ÷ 25.4
- Minimum rim = approximately 70% of section width in inches
- Maximum rim = approximately 95% of section width in inches
- Example: For a 265mm tire: (265 / 25.4) × 0.85 = 8.87 in → ideal is 8.0–8.5 inches
