BMW Tire Size Calculator

Before you swap sizes, check whether your BMW's xDrive system will tolerate it — this tool applies the 1% rolling-diameter rule automatically.

Quick Answer

BMW G20 3 Series M Sport leaves the factory on 225/45R18 front and 255/40R18 rear — rolling diameters of 25.97″ and 26.03″, a gap of just 0.21%, well within BMW's xDrive 1% rolling diameter limit. Swapping fronts to 235/45R18 (26.33″) creates a +1.35% gap which exceeds BMW's specification and risks transfer case stress. E/F-chassis use 5×120; G-chassis (2018+) use 5×112.

BMW xDrive limit: ≤1% rolling diameter difference between any two wheel positions (ideally ≤0.5%).

Supports P-metric format (e.g. 225/45R18). xDrive models enforce the 1% rolling diameter limit.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1Select your BMW model. Choose your model from the dropdown — the OEM front tire size fills automatically and the drive type (xDrive/RWD) is pre-set.
  2. 2Note staggered setup. If your BMW has a staggered setup, note the rear OEM size displayed in the staggered fitment banner.
  3. 3Enter your proposed size. Type the tire size you want to run in the "Your Size" panel (width / aspect ratio / rim diameter).
  4. 4Calculate & Compare. Click Calculate to see diameter difference, speedometer error, and — for xDrive models — the rolling diameter compliance check.
  5. 5Review the xDrive badge. Must stay under 1%, ideally under 0.5%, before ordering tires for any AWD BMW.

BMW Tire Sizing — xDrive AWD Rules & M Car Staggered Guide

The 1% xDrive rule is non-negotiable. BMW specifies a maximum 1% rolling diameter difference between any two tire positions on xDrive AWD models. The practical recommendation from BMW technicians is to stay under 0.5%. Exceeding 1% causes continuous mechanical stress on the transfer case and can trigger DSC faults.

G-chassis vs E/F-chassis bolt patterns differ. G-chassis BMWs (2018+) use 5×112 with 66.6 mm centerbore; earlier E and F-chassis models use 5×120 with 72.56 mm centerbore. These are not interchangeable — always verify before ordering aftermarket wheels.

M staggered setups are specifically engineered. The G80 M3 and G82 M4 use precisely calculated front/rear tire combinations (e.g. 275/40R18 F + 285/35R19 R on the M3 RWD) where the rolling diameter difference is kept under 1% despite the stagger. Changing one axle's size without rechecking the other axle can violate this balance.

Run-flat replacement is straightforward. Conventional tires can replace run-flats on any BMW. Rolling diameter and fitment calculations are identical — the only practical change is that you need to carry an inflation kit or spare wheel.
