Tesla Tire Size Calculator
See how a bigger wheel changes your Tesla's real-world range, whether XL load rating applies, and which sizes keep your bolt pattern correct.
Quick Answer
Most common Tesla OEM sizes: 235/40R19 XL (Model 3 LR Highland), 255/45R19 XL (Model Y LR), 285/65R20 (Cybertruck). All Tesla tires (except Cybertruck) must be XL-rated — EVs weigh 300–600 lbs more than ICE equivalents. Model 3/Y: 5×114.3 bolt pattern, 42 PSI cold. Going 18″ → 19″ costs approximately 8–12 EPA miles of range.
| Model / Config | OEM Size | Cold PSI | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model 3 LR (2024 Highland) | 235/40R19 XL | 42 PSI | Most common M3 globally |
| Model Y LR AWD | 255/45R19 XL | 42 PSI | Best range for MY |
| Model S LR (2021+) | 255/45R19 F / 285/40R19 R XL | 42 PSI | Staggered max range |
| Model X LR (2021+) | 255/45R20 XL | 45 PSI | Square — higher PSI than M3/Y |
| Cybertruck AWD | 285/65R20 | 50 PSI | No XL req — 6×139.7 BP |
TPMS calibrated to cold inflation. Hot tire pressure runs 2–4 PSI higher — do not deflate after driving.

How to Use This Calculator
- 1Select your Tesla model. Click Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, or Cybertruck on the OEM Lookup tab. All trims and generations for that model appear instantly.
- 2Read your OEM tire size. Find your generation and trim in the table. The Front and Rear columns show the exact OEM size code. The OD column shows the calculated outer diameter in inches for quick comparison.
- 3Compare a new tire size (optional). Go to the Size Diff tab. Enter your current stock size and the proposed new size. The calculator shows OD delta, EV Safety badge, estimated range impact, speedometer correction, and a visual comparison.
- 4Use a Quick Swap preset. Common Tesla size changes (e.g. Model 3 18"→19", Model Y 19"→21") are pre-loaded as one-click presets in the Size Diff tab to save time.
- 5Check Range Impact. The Range Impact tab compares all wheel configs for your model with EPA range estimates, Wh/100mi, rolling resistance, noise level, and cost per tire.
- 6Verify bolt pattern and fitment. The Bolt Pattern tab shows the correct bolt pattern (5×114.3, 5×120, or 6×139.7), center bore, lug thread size, and torque spec for every Tesla — essential before ordering aftermarket wheels.
Tesla Tire Sizing — EV-Specific Rules
XL rating is mandatory — not optional. Teslas weigh 300–600 lbs more than equivalent ICE vehicles. Standard load (SL) tires are not rated for this weight at highway speeds. Fitting SL tires risks sidewall failure, excessive heat, and potential loss of warranty coverage for suspension and drivetrain damage.
Foam-lined tires are an NVH requirement, not a luxury. Without engine noise, Tesla cabins amplify road and tire cavity resonance. The acoustic foam layer reduces this hum by ~9 dB. Replacing foam tires with non-foam equivalents noticeably increases cabin noise at highway speeds, particularly in the 100–250 Hz frequency range.
Staggered setups prevent front-to-rear rotation. The Model 3 Performance and most Model S/X trim levels use different front and rear sizes. Staggered tires can only be rotated side-to-side (left to right on the same axle) — never front to rear. This reduces tire life versus a square (equal-size) setup.
Every extra inch of rim diameter costs real range. 18″ Aero wheels on the Model 3 LR return roughly 80 more EPA miles than the 20\" Überturbine Perf wheels on the same car. Downgrading rim size (summer to winter season, or a permanent swap) is one of the most effective ways to extend range without software changes.
