Visual Tire Size Comparison

See any two tire sizes drawn side by side at true scale — spot the difference in width, sidewall height, and overall diameter at a glance.

Default Comparison — 205/55R16 vs 225/45R17

These two sizes have nearly identical overall diameters (631.9mm vs 634.3mm) but the 225/45R17 is 20mm wider with a 11.5mm shorter sidewall and a +1" rim. The 205/55R16 fills the arch with more sidewall rubber; the 225/45R17 looks flat and sporty with less cushion and more rim showing. Both sit at essentially the same height.

How to Read the Diagram

Tire height (overall diameter)

Both tires sit on a shared ground line. If one tire is taller, it visibly sticks up higher. A 25mm difference equals roughly 1 inch of height.

Section width

The horizontal span of each tire cross-section shows the section width. The width annotation below each tire gives the exact mm value.

Sidewall height

The gap between the ground and the rim is the sidewall. Lower aspect ratio = shorter sidewall = less rubber showing, more rim visible.

Rim diameter

The inner ellipse represents the wheel/rim. A 17-inch rim is visibly larger than a 16-inch rim inside the same-height tire.

How Aspect Ratio Changes the Visual Appearance

For a 225mm wide tire, what different aspect ratios look like: 225/75 → sidewall: 168.75mm Very tall rubber — off-road / truck appearance 225/65 → sidewall: 146.25mm Taller — crossover / SUV look 225/55 → sidewall: 123.75mm Standard — sedan / standard SUV 225/45 → sidewall: 101.25mm Low profile — sport / performance look 225/35 → sidewall: 78.75mm Very flat — aggressive sport / show car Rule: Sidewall Height = Section Width × (Aspect Ratio ÷ 100) The rim fills the rest: Overall Diameter = Rim (in inches × 25.4) + 2 × Sidewall

How to Use This Tool

  1. 1Enter Tire 1: Type your current (or reference) tire size in P-metric format — e.g. 205/55R16. This is the left tire in the diagram.
  2. 2Enter Tire 2: Type the size you want to compare — e.g. 225/45R17. This is the right tire in the diagram.
  3. 3Click Show Visual Comparison: The diagram renders both tires at the same scale so proportions are directly comparable. The summary line shows the key differences at a glance.
  4. 4Read the comparison table: Below the diagram, the table shows exact millimetre values for overall diameter, section width, sidewall height, and rim diameter — with the difference column highlighted.
